KERC participates in Jeju Forum for Peace and Prosperity

The 17th Jeju Forum for Peace and Prosperity was held at International Convention Center Jeju on 14th to 16th of September 2022.

The annual forum address and explore ways to tackle major global challenges such as the US-China rivalry, the war in Ukraine, the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change.

Dr. CHO Woohyun, the director general of Korea-EU Research Centre (KERC) participated the event as a session speaker via online. The subject of the session was focalized on:

'The Role of Scientists for Peace in the era of chaos and divisions.'

Along with the long tunnel of Covid-19, we are currently facing with new conflicts and crises in the new normal era, including armed conflict. Moreover, there is an analysis that the world economy could enter a deep recession within a few years, because of US inflation, Europe’s energy crisis, and China’s city lockdown caused by Omicron mutation.

In the midst of this, the existing issues such as environmental problems, climate change, resource depletion and cyberattacks are still worsening, so it is a time when response through sharing and application of scientific and technological knowledge is much more important than ever before. The coexistence and cooperation of scientists using cutting-edge science and technology such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and blockchain are emphasized on a global scale.

In this session, scientists from Korea and Europe gathered to discuss the role of scientists in overcoming current conflicts and crises from multi-layered perspective.

During the session, Dr. CHO underlined the importance of international cooperation in scientific research in the time of crisis. He also mentioned successful examples of research cooperation such as the development of vaccine against COVID-19. And he encouraged researchers to collaborate with international partners to share their knowledge and practice to address global challenges that we face today.

KERC is located in Brussels and plays its role as bridgehead between Korea and EU to facilitate their research cooperation.
