MSIT to harness digital innovation with private 5G, known as e-Um
The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT, Minister: Lee Jong-Ho) announced the launch of the pilot demonstration of ‘5G Mobile Communications Convergence Project’ together with the National Information Society Agency (NIA) and the National IT Industry Promotion Agency (NIPA).
This Project aims to discover and spread the use of 5G convergence services by tapping into private 5G networks and 5G technologies. The Project consists of three demonstration projects with 11 sub-tasks from the public and private sectors and is invested with a total of 48 billion won (US $37 million dollars).
A variety of enterprises and institutions have participated into this project, creating the foundation for the e-Um 5G ecosystem. In coming August, ‘5G alliance’ will be launched to encourage cooperation among industries, universities, research institutions, and public associations, and to prepare a e-Um 5G roadmap by industry and discover new business models that help the wider application of private 5G networks at home and abroad.
Minister Lee Jong-Ho said that “the e-Um 5G network-based convergence services will play a role as a new growth engine that leads digital innovation.” He added that “the government will put more efforts to discover new, diverse 5G convergence services and ensure that many of reference cases at home can be emulated at the global market, while focusing on building a 5G convergence ecosystem led by the private sector.”
MSIT and MND geared up to incubate tech capabilities among soldiers
The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT, Minister: Lee Jong-Ho) and the Ministry of National Defense (MND, Minister: Lee Jong-Sup) jointly hosted the vision declaration ceremony in an aim to incubate AI and software capabilities of Korea soldiers. The ceremony was arranged to commemorate the partnership of the two Ministries for joint education projects, including online AI/software lectures for soldiers, military-specialized AI education for officers, and the opening of a dedicated education centre. This ceremony was joined by high-level officials such as Minister Lee Jong-Ho of Science and ICT, and Minister Lee Jong-Sup of National Defense, along with the heads of tech giants such as Kakao Enterprise, Naver Cloud, KT, Amazon, and Microsoft.
Under the vision of ‘Creating Digital Talent Powerhouse Together, Promoting Digitally Skilled Military Force,’ the two Ministries set out the following goals: One is to produce, by 2026, 50,000 digital experts who will contribute to the digital industry after discharged from military service. The other is to nurture 1,000 soldiers with digital skills, who will lead the science and technology industry.
This event offered the visitors hands-on experiences of diverse digital services, career counselling, and a chance to look around a newly built AI/software education centre.
