MSIT to draw up a R&D strategy to achieve super gap in display
The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT, Minister: Lee Jong-Ho) plans to draw up a R&D strategy to secure super gap and lead the display market, which is one of critical and emerging technologies in the era of fourth industrial revolution.
Minister Lee had a joint conference with experts from the related industry, academia, and research institutes to discuss the direction of the R&D investment of the private and public sectors, and of infrastructure construction for research and talent nurturing. Following comprehensive discussions, MSIT will roll out the R&D strategy to secure super gap in display late this year.
Since display, along with semiconductor, has served as a great contributor to Korea’s economic growth, the Korean government chose display as one of the critical and emerging technologies and included it in the national agenda, and a full range of support will be provided to the display industry.
The Second Nuri Rocket(KSLV-II) Launch set on June 15
MSIT set June 15, 2022 as the second launch date for KSLV-II, also known as Nuri, with reserved launch dates between June 16 and 23. The launch date was designated by the Launch Management Committee, a decision-making body for Nuri launch, after a comprehensive review on technical preparedness and various launch conditions such as weather conditions, space environment, and possibilities of collisions between space objects.
A performance verification satellite will be loaded this time onto the space vehicle and a comprehensive drill was conducted on May 19 against possible contingencies and to ensure public safety on the launch date.
First Vice Minister Oh Taeseog of Science and ICT said that "Korean researchers and professionals from the industry have made full-fledged efforts to identify and make technical improvement since the first launch of Nuri. Now that I visit the Naro Space Center, looking around the launch site and reported of the performance verification satellite inspection results, I can feel their hard work more than ever."
"As we are loading the performance verification satellite onto Nuri this time, which is a first trial to lift off our own satellite independently, the government will also provide an unwavering support to the end," added he.
Minister Lee Jong-Ho to visit AI Chip Maker in his first field visit
Minister Lee Jong-Ho of Science and ICT visited Furiosa AI, a Korean fabless semiconductor company, on May 24, in his first field visit after his inauguration. The visit was accompanied with a roundtable and discussion with professionals from the AI chip maker and related experts.
His visit to the AI chip manufacturer reaffirmed MSIT’s willingness to grow AI chips as the next-generation driving engine in the semiconductor industry. As has been confirmed at the KOR-US Summit where the two Presidents made commitment to enhance bilateral cooperation in cutting-edge technologies including semiconductor, semiconductor has now become a crucial element that affects competitiveness of all industries and a nation’s security.
“To become a leading nation in the semiconductor industry, we should enhance our competitiveness in system chips where we are lagging behind while continuing to reinforce our global leadership in memory chips. Tapping into memory chips’ technologies and know-hows and the talent nurturing endeavour will enhance our nation’s competitiveness,” said Minister Lee, prior to the roundtable.
“AI semiconductor has potential to grow as it is still in its infancy stage. Korea can lead the global market if we work hard. Our government will provide full support for the industry’s growth as well as innovation in AI chip technologies. For starters, MSIT will release the “Support Plan for AI Chip Industry Growth(Tentative)” in June, reflecting voices from the industry,” added Minister Lee.
Starting with his first field visit, MSIT will continue to increase cooperation among businesses, research institutes and academia in the AI semiconductor field, with the goal to create a virtuous cycle of tech development, talent nurturing, and industry growth.
