The South Korean government joined the race of next generation ICT proprietary technology developments, including core quantum computing technology, by investing 44.5 billion won (US$39.8 million) over the next five years, which will significantly enhance the computational performance and security of computers using quantum mechanics principles.
The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) announced on Jan. 31 that its quantum computing technology development project and the next-generation information computing technology development project for 2019 have been finalized and are ready to kick off.
The new quantum computing technology development project aims to secure core technologies of quantum computer, which are actively explored and developed for practical application worldwide.
Over the next five years, a total of 44.5 billion won (US$40 million) will be invested in the development of core technologies like quantum computer hardware and in future promising areas, including quantum computing new architecture, quantum algorithms, and base software. This year, six billion won (US$5.4 million) will be invested.
Through the development of key technologies for quantum computing, the government plans to complete demonstration of the practical five-qubit (qubit information unit) quantum computer system with more than 90 percent reliability by 2023.
In addition, the government will use state money of 13.4 billion won (US$12 million) to support the development of key proprietary technologies in four areas, which includes system software, software engineering, information and intelligence systems, and human computer interaction (HCI), through the next generation information computing technology development project in the field of software and computing.
