Korea has started to provide the world’s first commercial 5G network service from Dec. 1.
5G is considered the core infrastructure of the fourth industrial revolution characterized by the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence (AI) and autonomous vehicles. The highest data transmission speed is 20Gps, 20 times faster than 4G LTE. Its data speed delay is below 1ms, lower than one 100th of that of LTE.
Thanks to the faster communication speed, the new service is expected to help boost ultra high definition video technology that requires a high amount of data transmission, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality and hologram-combined digital media businesses.
Korea’s major telecommunications providers announced on Nov. 29 that they would deploy commercial 5G network services in six metropolitan cities, including Seoul starting from Dec. 1. The 5G deployment is targeting firms by using mobile routers due to the limited areas for electric wave transmission.
Each of these service providers will actively use the 5G network in their specialized sectors. SK Telecom will deploy 5G services for Myunghwa Ind., an automobile parts manufacturer located in Banwol Industrial Complex Area. Myunghwa will adopt “5G-AI machine vision” which will check deformities in products by using AI and photo analysis technology. SK has also been enthusiastic about developing technology in the autonomous vehicle sector. In February this year, SK demonstrated two 5G network-based autonomous vehicles sharing traffic information at the K-City, a pilot city for self-driving in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi-do Province.
KT will concentrate on the VR game industry based on the 5G network. KT opened the first VR-based theme park, VRIGHT, this March. Since then, the firm has been planning to export VRIGHT-related technology to European or South Asian markets.
LG Uplus will develop 5G service in various sectors such as 5G-based remote control technology for heavy equipment or agricultural machinery, smart factories, AI-equipped CCTV, map service for autonomous vehicles, and 5G-based smart city technology.
The 5G deployment for smartphone users will roll out in March next year when 5G-customized smartphones will be launched. When the service is introduced, users will be able to download a two-hour-long high-definition movie within just ten seconds and to enjoy reality-based media technology.
