The AI World Cup 2018 International Tournament, where artificial intelligence (AI) engineers and programmers compete with their soccer programs, was held in Korea. It was the first-ever AI soccer tournament in the world, and, as a result, it received a lot of attention from all around the world.
The computer program soccer tournament, which was hosted by the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in Daejeon, was held over three days from Aug. 20 to 22. Internationally renowned universities and research institutes in the field of AI, such as KAIST, Seoul National University, Google and MIT, participated in the event.
There were 29 teams from 12 countries, including the U.S., Brazil, Iran, China, Taiwan, France and India. Among them, there were 23 teams in the AI soccer category, four teams in the AI commentator category, which analyzed and explained the computer program soccer match, and two teams in the AI reporter category, which wrote articles and commentaries about each computerized soccer match, all using artificial intelligence. The winners were announced in each of the three categories.
The engineers and programmers used AI technologies to program in soccer tactics, such as "Q-learning," which is a method of reinforcement learning. For each game, five algorithms competed in a simulation game, each with a five-minute first half and a five-minute second half. The computer programs had to score without any manual input from the engineers or programmers.
