The fifth meeting of ROK-ASEAN Joint Science and Technology Committee

The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT, Minister: Lee Jong-Ho) virtually had the fifth meeting of ROK-ASEAN Joint Science and Technology Committee on June 15 with Association of South-East Asian Nations(ASEAN) Committee on Science, Technology & Innovation. The Joint Committee is a regular meeting held every two years since 2013 to strengthen cooperation in science and technology between Korea and ASEAN.

This year’s meeting served as an opportunity to better understand the science and technology policies of Korea and ASEAN by sharing major related policies. Based on the shared interest, new cooperation measures in carbon neutrality, green transition, and research environment were discussed.

At the end of the meeting, Korea and ASEAN agreed to develop ROK-ASEAN Joint Science and Technology Committee to ROK-ASEAN Joint Science, Technology, and Innovation Committee.

ICT exports marked record high for May

MSIT announced that South Korea’s exports of information and communications technology (ICT) products for May marked record high last month. The exports reached US $20.20 billion, a 13.9% increase year on year, showing a steady double-digit growth rate for 14 months.

Despite the overall export deficit caused by worsening supply chain instability, ICT exports showed surplus gains of US $7.59 billion, up by US $0.38 billion year on year. Semiconductor exports, especially, marked record high amount of US $11.61 billion, exceeding US $10 billion for 13 consecutive months.

Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) also posted a steady double-digit increase for 19 consecutive months to reach US $4.64 billion with semiconductors, electric devices, and connecting parts.
