Korean Government Aims to Develop Prototype of CPU for Super Computers by 2023

The Korean government will launch a project to develop a central processing unit (CPU) for supercomputer with Korea’s own technology. The government's idea is to complete the development of a prototype by 2023 and localize it through subsequent studies.

The Ministry of Science and ICT plans to invest nine billion won in the Supercomputer Development Project this year.

This project aims to design and develop the hardware and software of a supercomputer CPU with Korea’s own technology by investing a total of 46 billion won from 2020 to 2023. To this end, Korea will develop software and computation nodes to secure and manage a high-performance, low-power-consumption CPU for a supercomputer. Then, it will develop cluster nodes by connecting multiple computation nodes.

Moreover, to increase CPU utilization, Korea plans to design hardware and software technology together from the beginning of development, and secure technology to design CPUs specialized for supercomputing applications.

The Ministry of Science and ICT is planning to develop a prototype of the Super Computer CPU by 2023 through an industry-academia-research lab consortium, and complete the Korean Super Computer CPU through follow-up studies after a preliminary feasibility study.
