Minister of Environment Kim Eunkyung will attend the upcoming High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) held at U.N. headquarters from July 16 to 19 as the official Korean representative.

According to the Ministry of Environment, Minister Kim will elaborate on President Moon Jae-in's pursuit of an integrated water management system and the transition to green energy, all to ensure a "sustainable Korea." Minister Kim will also stress that this initiative coincides with the U.N.'s adoption of its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The environment minister will introduce Korea's national sustainable development goals, the so-called "K-SDGs," to the international body, too. Minister Kim will meet with leaders from major international organizations, such as the U.N. Development Programme (UNDP) and the U.N. Environment Programme (UNEP), and hold in-depth discussions about cooperative solutions to facilitate transitions toward a sustainable society.

The High-Level Political Forum (HLPF), which began in 2013, is held annually at U.N. headquarters in July to evaluate each nation's SDGs and to provide international guidelines.

The theme of this year's forum is "transformation toward sustainable and resilient societies." Participants will review six areas of the U.N.'s SDGs and adopt a ministerial declaration.

The six areas include: issues concerning water and sanitation; energy; sustainable cities; sustainable consumption and production patterns; sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems; and global partnerships for sustainable development.

Finally, Minister Kim said, "Korea will strive to become a leading country in the international society concerning sustainable development through the successful establishment and practice of the K-SDGs."
